Dear Mrs. Hasler:

Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding incidents of sexual assault in the United States military. I appreciate hearing from all Pennsylvanians about this important issue.

After hosting several constituent roundtable discussions, I am troubled that incidents of sexual assault remain prevalent within the United States military. It is my understanding that the Department of Defense has taken steps to prevent such incidents and punish offenders; however, more still needs to be done.

For this reason, I wrote Secretary of Defense Robert Gates a letter in July asking him a series of detailed questions. I asked him to explain how the U.S. military deals with sexual assault reports, why a servicemember must report a sexual assault claim to their commanding officer instead of an
independent advocate and who makes the final decision on what type of punishment is given to an offender.

Since 2003, more than 160,500 – or one in seven – servicemembers deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East are women. This number
demonstrates the vital contribution that women provide to our all-volunteerforce. As your United States Senator, I believe our Nation owes these
women a debt of gratitude for their service; therefore, I called upon Secretary Gates to provide the necessary leadership to eradicate this scourge of sexual assault.
